The current president, GW Bush, amazingly, sometimes uses the phrase "human rights," when he obviously has no real understanding of the term (or despises it). He basically supports torture and premeditated killing. His use of the term implies that his hearers too (the American people) do not understand human rights either. What would it take to enable Americans to understand human rights? (I just know a lot of teens will rant their support of the death penalty here, if they comprehend at all that the death penalty is a human rights issue. Perhaps they'd do better to visit AI USA's web site instead of this one. So many kids are in desperate need of self respect.)

Your question is most certainly a ubiquitous one and I hope those who answer you are able to shed a small approximation of light on the meaning of the lost of human rights. However, I can tell you first hand that you probably will not get an honest answer from the majority of your participants for two major reasons.

The first reason can be made obvious in the fact that those of you whom currently reside in the U.S. barely have any conception of what REAL sacrifice and lost of all your rights involves and its symbolic meaning. In the course of the last twenty years you have all basically had everything handed to you over the last three generations and have all been spoon-fed and continue to be spoon-fed a conditioning or brain-washing of your minds which has slowly but surly erroided your rights not only as an individual human being but your rights as a tax paying citizen. This makes it doubtful you could interpret a nuclear blast from a nebular blast.

Secondly, I can promise you that none of you know how many thousands of ex-pats there are living out here in the world including men of great rank, that have had to give up or been forced to give up our livelihoods, our families, and our homeland America in order to maintain self-protection from the current persecution, and the tyranny of the U.S. Government.

We, who are born American citizens; who have fought for our country; who believe in the US Constitution and The Decraration of Independence unaltered by current illegal changes; who have given everything including our lives during America’s unjustified acts in both civil and regional combatant conflicts developed and implementeted for the sole purpose to steal, control, and possess other countries abroad and their populances; who have in honest and sincere belief given everything to up-hold the spirit of freedom you think you now have; who have had to, and still are placing ourselves in self-exile awaiting the end of a long term self banishment to return to our homes and loved ones and return our homeland back to the people. You have no idea what true sacrifice and lost of human rights really is until American blood has been spilled for useless and reckless causes in the name of political and capital gain now in place.

You don't know what you've got til it's gone.

It is hard for americans to comprehend the larger picture of the global human rights crisis because so many of us have very little understanding of how it is in the rest of the world. We have become lazy and accustomed to luxuries that a huge portion of the world cannot immagine. We have let our leaders run like rabid dogs upon the globe, exploiting resources, holding alliances with corrupt governments etc etc. Ours is a nation of dummies who think that might equals right and that violence is a solution to violence. What would it take for us to comprehend and participate in the solutions needed for a kinder global community?
1. Live simply. reduce use of precious resources in every household
2. elect leaders dedicated to human rights issues
3. seriously address the issues of poverty and racism in this nation
4. Convict leaders involved in crimes against humanity
5. do away with capital punishment
6. focus on crime prevention through a balance of power in this nation
7. required school programs that foster an awareness of human rights
8. required participation in service learning in all public schools

Americans invented Human rights. You should try to live in my original country. There was no human rights there. Here I have so many rights I did even not know existed. Here my boss cannot hit me. In my country it is okay for the boss to smack the employees.

You assume that people will act contrary to their own interests for the betterment of all humans. Please show me an example where an entire NATION has made this choice.

I know that there are individuals and groups that do it every day, but we are talking big picture.
