As people of different regions became increasingly similar to one another in attitudes, habits, and ways of life, and as cross-country commerce and travel increased.. YES, it is possible..but also implausible.
There remained differences and competition between countries and regions, but war could be psychologically excluded as a response to these rivalries, not because of any overarching police power that prohibited it, but simply because it is unthinkable that one would fire cannon between, say, Kentucky and Tennessee.
The North American consensus during the world wars reflected the continent's shared identity, which extended at least to Britain among the European nations. The wartime experiences reinforced that identity as typically happens among people who coalesce against a common enemy, however, war was not the essential cause of the convergence, which proceeded apace during decades when there was no external enemy of consequence.
The shared common currency, one army and single governing body (combined) with increasing inter dependencies..shared culture and language, are more important than warfare in solidifying and extending peace.. equality and equal distribution of resources.
Can this happen? Why not.. Let's keep dreaming!

to see what will happen if the whole world is united in one country, just look at what goes on within a country
the lesson of history is that the ONLY way to have liberty and justice is with justice in pay
pay is power
justice is only possible between equals, as thucydides [greek historian] said 2500 years ago
between unequals in power, the only possible relation is the weaker putting up with whatever the stronger hands out - and, if fighting back, getting put down hard
since you want peace, equality, you must have a majority wanting peace and equality - for that, a majority have to learn the essential importance of justice/equality for survival, peace and happiness
so you need to educate a majority to become clear about the essential importance of equality and justice
because the majority is always more powerful than the plutocracy
whether the world is in many countries or one is irrelevant, unimportant, noncritical
what is important is money/power spread as the work is spread
justice is equal pay for equal work
inequality grows endlessly - ie, you cannot have a little inequality - you can have equality or you can have a lot of inequality, ie, unpeace, oppression, tyranny, warmongering, cannonfodder, universal misery and unsafety for rich and poor
the poorer the poor are, the less safe the rich are, the more that security costs the rich, and the more certain it is that security will fail at some point
alexander the great said he could always take a town with a golden arrow - ie, that where there was wealth and poverty, overpay and underpay, ie injustice, he could find enough discontent in that town or state to find a crack in its defenses
injustice is discontent is weak security
if there had been no injustice, ie theft, in britain, there would have been no significant numbers of people believing that communism was better- there would not have been treacherous spies like burgess etc
the state built on injustice cannot stand
but where is the state objectively, impartially, fairly determining the quantification of justice in pay so that there may be justice, and thus peace, security, stability, safety, happiness, order?
quantification of justice in pay is easy enough - i have done it - it is for a majority to care enough to check out my quantification of justice, which is the door to peace, harmony, quietness, safety, order, happiness
for, only a majority is powerful enough to control the super overpaid
if a majority will not be mature, responsible, selfcaring, enough to check this out, peace and happiness will continue to be impossible
and we now have the power to destroy all life on earth 60 times over with atomic smoke blocking out the sun everywhere permanently
is there enough maturity and responsibility and intelligence and consciousness in humanity to save itself from the violence engendered by the super hyper extreme injustice in pay?
or not?
how much maturity and realism and responsibility is there in you?
the planet needs YOU
[whoever you are]
if not you, no one
if not now, too late
have you got the spirit, the guts, the spunk, the cajones, the consciousness, the courage, the integrity to face the terrible reality and contribute to solving the problem?

I agree with Zagros, Nationalism is powerful. The only way I see the world unified is if the Aliens from outer space attacked the earth. Than the world might come together. Than after the human race defeats the aliens than we will go back to fighting one another over who won.
Let's face it, Sharing the world is not a great human attribute.

Equal distribution of resources means everybody must work the same and be as smart as each other otherwise people do not accept it. They try to escape it like when they wanted to leave USSR and why people escape Cuba.

Question: If the whole world were unified, why would it need an army?
In any case, I seriously doubt such a thing would happen any time soon. Nationalism is too powerful a force.

Its a nice vision, but will probably never happen. The world is filled with differences that we just can't settle. That's why there's war. That's why there's tension.
