I ask because someone I know was taught Kanji's. I imagine these are the same as symbols?

Yes they are taught at second level, but there are many schools of reiki and they all teach differently. I have been taught Usui and Tibetan.
Do not worry too much about symbols, they really matter little. Your intent and purity of heart in helping another is what is paramount. With that all else will follow, believe me I have seen it.

Some of the symbols are based on Kanji.
And some lineages/styles of Reiki do teach one symbol in Level 1. One of the methods I learned was like that.

yes the reiki symbols are tought, but only to the person who has completed the 2nd level of reiki.
