If you were my student I'd go with you to a guitar shop and look for a nice acoustic in the $100 to $150 range...I'd get you some light gauge strings for it...a Mel Bay Chord Book with pictures and illustrations...a cheap tuner and teach you how to tune it...it's good to know where the notes are on the piano in relation to open plucked strings...we might spend $200 at the most and then we'd start working on learning a few simple chords so we can put a few songs together to make it interesting...if you're still interested and have made progress in a few weeks time I'd start teaching you some lead...simple stuff...and then get more complicated as you progressed...just don't buy a cheap assed guitar from a pawn shop when you're just learning to play...you won't know what to look for and will probably end up wasting your money and not learn a damn thing because it will be so frustrating to try and play a messed up instrument. The first month or two will be difficult because you have to toughen up your fingers...that's why I say go with light gauge strings...heaviest strings an electric will take and lightest an acoustic will take...something that doesn't have a wound "G" but is still heavy enough to make the acoustic resonate pretty good. Then you just practice daily...maybe a couple hours a day fiddling about with it. Listen to what sounds you produce and always make sure that you put the sound of the guitar above any other physical discomfort you may experience in the first few weeks of practice and learning.

don't just start out on acoustic, that would be a big mistake. keep your options open. there is no best guitar or best way to learn guitar. you just have to pick the guitar that feels right to you, one that YOU would be comfortable learning on. then just find a teacher or start with the basics and work your way up. basically though if you just get an acoustic right off the bat then if you want to play electric your f#cked. i would definatly go with a nice electric/acoustic. that way your options are always open, if you want acoustic just keep it unplugged, then if you want electric plug it in. the people telling you to learn on acoustic first obviously just like acoustic better but it all depends on what you want to play and how you want to play it. music has no real order(they say it does but it doesn't) everything is driven by the feeling you put into it.

well man, you can use the net such as....www.cyberfret.com it has alot of useful tips for beginners, or you could use www.ultimate-guitar.com (recommended). They both are very very detailed about what you should be learning and how to do things. They have forums so you can talk to other guitarists, ask them questions...etc...and they have a lessons page as well. Or books are good..I have a book on Scales...an important factor in guitar playing. Its called "monster book of scales" I highly recommend that, but before you know scales, get down some chords and learn how to read a little bit of music

yea, start with an acousitc first, look for beginning guitar books also. I like to get books that teach you the basic chords and what notes the strings are. Also books with hand exercises so your fingers get used to pressing string.
Just start out with finding out the notes of each string, what the basic format of the guitar is, like frets. Then build up from there....chords, reading notes, tablature...
