how can i make a file and a folder password protected?

i use win.xp proffesional,i don't want to use a software but if there is no other way then please tell me the software.

Try Using Folder Lock.

without using any software its not possible, however you can hide the folder you wish.I hope you know how to this, if not then here are the steps.
Right click on that particular folder you want to hide, check the box next to hidden.
the next time when you want to use the same folder, go to my computer --Tools from the upper Menu--Folder Options--View--select show hidden files and folders. BUT remember that other can also use this method to view the hidden files if obviously they know how to.

for locking a word and excel doc all you have to to is to go to tools of that doc and option and select save and then password option.
for excel tools--protection--password option
