If, a 16-year-old kid, were to consider multimedia or graphics, what would he be doing day to day? What sort of strength will he require to excel? Would there be a future (promotions) in game programming?

Ive helped publish games. Its not a good career choice altho its not a bad secondary job. But I wouldnt want to raise a family on it. Its a big gamble and its hard to win big at it.

On the other hand, any skill in multimedia or graphics can gaurantee you getting some kind of a job to live on. Even getting good at programming altho thats also abit of a gamble.

Im afraid that the skills needed are different in each of those areas so its hard to make a general answer. Some things NOT to do would be
A) Never let yourself think that you are too good to continue school. Even if you DO know more than people in college, thats not going to get you ahead of them by itself.
B) Dont "put all your eggs in one basket". Dont let anyone convince you to concentrate on only one programming language, or developing software, or operating system, or college major. Its really hard to get to the front of the line by specialising. Double or triple your areas, then work them in together. That will move you to the front of that much shorter line.

A basic programming skill... C++ is the best, then if you choose to work alone, build skills for Modelling, DirectX (download the SDK in microsoft's website, it comes with manual and samples). Then you could also learn how to make music for your game (you don't like silent game, right?). Making games is hard and you gotta be patient, it could take more than a year to finish one.

If you want to make simpler game, you could try flash.
