0.25 pounds = 113.3980926 grams
Therefore, 1/4 lb of mercury occupies a volume of 113.3980926/13.55 mL=8.37 mL

Since 1lb=454g, than 1/4lb = 113.5g. To get the volume, you have to divide mass by density: 113.5g/13.55 g/mL = 8.38 mL. Keep in mind that I am keeping two significant figures, since 13.55 is an exact number.

thanks I've always wondered what the density of mercury was ( oh wait THE DENSITY CHANGES WITH TEMPERATURE that's what makes it the fluid of choice for thermometers ) ( hope this was a math only ? and not a trick ? on a science exam --and it was a poor choice if it was --but what do you expect from a 2006 textbook )
