English isn't my native language, so I need a native English speaker to help me solving this question. I just had a short conversation with a friend of mine and I didn't know what to answer his question. Because we had not seen each other for quite a while, he asked where have I been. What can I say if I face the same question next time?

Did you friend simply say "Where have you been"? You shouldn't see that as a deep question, people ask that all the time when they haven't seen someone for a while. You could say something simple like "I've been busy" or "Around" or actually say something about where you've been in case you've been out-of-town or really busy at home or on a job doing something. There are lots of ways of answering this question.

One more thing you can do is flip the question right around and ask your friend immediately after: "And where have you been?"

This is pretty much a generic greeting, much like "How are you?" He's not really looking for details. If you've been somewhere interesting, tell him that, otherwise, "Around," is a perfectly acceptable response.

It's simply a casual greeting simliar to "What's up?" So, just about any answer is fine. I usually answer, "I've been here, where have you been?"

He just wanted to know what you've been doing with yourself since he last met you or talked to you. i.e. what's new in your life, what statements are now true/not true about you that were not true/true about you the last time we talked/met

I have been to London! I have been to market. I've been to My school. etc etc

Where have you been? is equivalent to 'where did you go? Or where have you gone?'
