i was about to buy a pair of jeans online but i was unsure of what size so i measured myself exactly how they said to and looked at their size chart...i have 37" hips which apparently translates to sizes 4-6 (i saw these same figures on numerous websites so i think they are kind of standard). anyway i was shocked b/c i never fit in a 4 or 6 in a store....always way bigger! long story short i dragged myself down to the mall and only 8 and 10 and larger fit...why so inconsistent? why have i been feeling fat all these years buying 8's and 10's and 12's when according to my measurements i'm a small, a 4/6?

Since when is an 8 fat?
Besides the fact the clothing manufactures use different sizing guidelines, there is no industry standard. Because you measured yourself. When you measure yourself, you are almost guaranteed to get the wrong measurement. A fabric tape can stretch, a tape can slip from the part you are trying to measure to a smaller area when you pull on it, and your hips aren't the only thing that need to fit into the jeans. While you may have smaller hips, your waist, thighs, butt, and inseam may need a bigger size. Go to the store and ask to be measured by the clerk. If she can't do it, ask where you could get it done. For proper measurements, you have to have someone else take them, whether it's clothing, bras, or shoes. We can't find it out all on our own because we have to move our arms to do it, and the rest of our body moves and stretches with us.
Go with what fits in the stores, not a chart. If you need a 8, 10, 12 at the store, don't buy a 4 on line and expect it to fit.

37 inch hips is definitely about a standard size 6-8, certainly no bigger. I have 38 inch hips and always wear an 8. I can't believe you were wearing a 10-12, wasn't it falling off your hips? Enjoy the ego boost : )

it depends on the brand. you have to know what size you are in each of the brands you buy if you're going to shop online for stuff. also sometimes your size in the same brand will differ depending on the cut of the garment. a lot of websites offer free shipping and returns like victoria's secret. but don't buy their jeans, ewww.

maybe because we all are DIFFERENT ! Wait 10 years and you will have a body image scanner option on your computer and then things will fit ! On second thought maybe next year !
