I've heard eventually it turns from the red scar to a light silvery scar. How long does that take? I still have a red gash across my abdomen.

Scars really depend on how well the person heals up, but it can take a long time but there are things you can do to heal. I have 2 c sections and a huge number of other surgerys and over time I have found out a few things. The first thing I found out is if you take vitiam E it can help the scarring heal better, vit E promotes red blood cell growth and the better the blood supply in that area the better and smaller the scar, you can also put the Vit E directly on the skin to help also, it softens the sking and lightens the scar color. And there is also the Over the counter scar medications now that you can use to make your scar smaller and lighter in color. You can do a research on what vitiams can help you a little more, it is differant for each person and you need to find what your body needs to heal better.

My mom had a hysterectomy a while back and her scar didnt change colors for about 4-6 months. It started out being really hard and really red. Then it started to become a more normal color and began to soften up.

Here's what you can do...
Rub vitamin E into the scar.
Rub hard enough to make it red X's 20 minutes.
That will loosen up the skin and start desensitizing it.
If it really bothers you,
You can have it injected with steroids to fade the scar
And/Or have plastic surgery.
Do not expose the scar to sunlight for the first year, or else it will remain dark.

I had one 23 years ago and some of the red is still there. Sorry I can't give you better news. Use a scar cream that they didn't have years ago and that will help some.
