A dad who was too busy working to spend time with is son. The son wanted to hang out but the dad couldn't. As the dad aged and slowed down, he wanted to spend time with his son but his son was busy with his own 'life'. Then when the son married and had his own son, he too was too busy to spend time with his son.

It's really a song about living in the moment and appreciating those people around you, especially your children because they grow up soooooo fast.

It is the story of a father who is too busy with work and related obligations to have enough time to spend with his son, though in the chorus the son comments to his dad "I'm gonna be like you".

Later, after his son grows up and he now wants to spend time with him, the son now finds excuses to avoid spending time with his father.

Too late, the father discovers his son has grown up just to be like him.

Additional info...
The song was written by Harry Chapin's wife Sandy, a poet and writer, long before the birth of their son Joshua. When Sandy showed it to Harry, there was only casual interest.

After Joshua's birth, Harry realized just how much the song meant to him and, after retooling it some, eventually recorded it.

The song became the best known of Harry's work and a staple for folk rock music.

It's about a man who was busy the whole time his son was growing up, but in spite of that his son still wanted to be like him. Then, when the man grew old and wanted to spend time with his son, the son didn't have time for the dad -- he had grown up to be just like his dad.

You are the greatest influence on your children. The singer never had time for his son while he was growing up. Later, when he was grown, he had no time for the father.
