I am working with an excel spreadsheet. I would like to remove the page numbers (e.g. Page 1) that display in the background. These numbers are gray but transparent and are very nerve wracking. They do not print, but since they they get in the way and it is necessary to squint to see what it behind them, I would like to know the steps to remove them. I tried help but no luck

It sounds like your view is set to Page Break Preview. Go to the view menu and select normal.

Go to "view" and change to "Normal". It sounds like you are on "Page Break View".

You can reset the page breaks by right clicking on a cell by the break and choose "Reset All Breaks".
