After highschool, if you attend a two year community college - you get an associates degree. However, some do not transfer - it's the Associate of Arts that transfers to a University. If you go straight to a University (a four year college) after highschool - you continue through four years of an undergraduate program and be awarded Bachelors degree. Then you go to graduate school and receive a Masters, then following a doctorate. At the second year of the University level - you have two years of college - but, you do not get any degree - just able to say that you attend college on any application. It is only at the Community Colleges you will receive an Associates degree (make sure it's transferable). I been to college - and, I did the 2 years first at a community college, then the remaning two years at a University.

Community Colleges and Junior Colleges offer associates degrees (2 years, normally) where Colleges and Universities offer Bachelor degrees (4 years, normally). Next comes the masters. You do not have to have an associates to get your bachelors.

If you go to a community college, trade school or a school that offers a two year program...then you get your associate's degree. If you attend a four year school, you get a bachelor's degree. After that, you have so many options for graduate and doctorate programs. Most graduate programs are 2 years for a masters. But some have 3 year doctorate programs ( you completely by-pass the master's degree).
It depends on what type of job you want to get for what type of degree you need, in the work force.

An associate's degree is usually only a 2 year degree and can be earned at a technical school. A bachelor's degree is about 4 years and you have to go to a university to get one. After you have a bachelor's degree, you can go on to get a master's, then a ph.d,then doctorate's I think.

In addition, there are some college programs that lead to a Certifcation-LPN, certain medical professions.
Also, there is a Diploma in Nursing (RN) that is beyond high school, but is not a degree.

If you go to a four-year college or university then you get a BA (or BS or BSE) directly right after. No intermediary degrees are necessary in that case.
