"...what is dark matter?..."
Gravity determines how things like planets, stars and galaxies move in space. Astronomers have carefully measured the movement of certain galaxies and found that there's not enough gravity around them to make them move the way they do. Therefore, there must be something else there that makes them move as they do. Astronomers can't detect this mysterious stuff, so it's simply called "dark matter."

"...conspiracy theory?..."
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of conspiracy theories! One of the most popular is that the manned moon landings never happened but were nothing more than a huge conspiracy put together by the government. Another conspiracy theory is that the government knows what UFOs are and actually has a few crashed flying saucers. Generally, a conspiracy is kind of like a lie.

It is believed that dark matter was instrumental in forming galaxies early in the Big Bang.

Dark Matter is .. Physical objects or particles that emit little or no detectable radiation of their own and are postulated to exist because of unexplained gravitational forces observed on other astronomical objects. Dark matter is believed to be part of the missing mass.

Dark Matter conspiracy theory ?

Some say Until someone goes out and brings back a bottle of this dark matter for laboratory analysis, the "dark matter" idea should be treated as just a theory .

News item, September 1995: Accumulating data of star distributions in space shows that galaxies are not distributed uniformly, but crowd together along walls and filaments, with huge voids in between. Some describe this as looking like a "froth" or "bubble" structure—on a cosmically vast scale. The puzzle is to understand how this came about, from the infant universe to the lumpy patchwork we see now. Was the structure in place before stars and galaxies formed, or did early smaller irregularities in matter density have gravitational effects that caused formation of large structured irregularities? A computer model developed in 1983 shows that dark matter probably played an early role in shaping the galactic distribution we now observe.

News item, March 2000: An international team of researchers headed by Yannick Mellier used a wide-field camera to map 200,000 galaxies over a 2 square degree patch of sky. Special computer software analyzed this to detect distortion of the light from the galaxies due to dark matter, creating a map of the dark matter. They concluded that dark matter is concentrated in ribbons spread among the galaxies. Mellier and his colleagues created a chart of the region, revealing that dark matter exists as ribbons spread among the galaxies. The astronomers hope that this will be the next step toward finally ending the dark-matter conundrum. The results have been submitted for publication to the European journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.
