Gravity determines how things like planets, stars and galaxies move in space. Astronomers have carefully measured the movement of certain galaxies and found that there's not enough gravity around them to make them move the way they do. Therefore, there must be something else there that makes them move as they do. Astronomers can't detect this mysterious stuff, so it's simply called "dark matter."

One of the most popular is that the manned moon landings never happened but were nothing more than a huge conspiracy put together by the government. Another conspiracy theory is that the government knows what UFOs are and actually has a few crashed flying saucers. Generally, a conspiracy is kind of like a lie.

Some describe this as looking like a "froth" or "bubble" structure—on a cosmically vast scale. News item, March 2000: An international team of researchers headed by Yannick Mellier used a wide-field camera to map 200,000 galaxies over a 2 square degree patch of sky. Special computer software analyzed this to detect distortion of the light from the galaxies due to dark matter, creating a map of the dark matter. They concluded that dark matter is concentrated in ribbons spread among the galaxies. Mellier and his colleagues created a chart of the region, revealing that dark matter exists as ribbons spread among the galaxies. The astronomers hope that this will be the next step toward finally ending the dark-matter conundrum. The results have been submitted for publication to the European journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.
