a through z, and also 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 make up the "alphanumeric characters." alpha means alphabet, and numeric is the number characters.

Alphabetic means just letters
Numeric means just numbers.
Phone numbers are Numeric.
Names are Alphabetic.
License Plates are Alpha Numeric
