I live in Southeast Texas and have fair weather most of the year, so, in my opinion gas is more cost effective in the long run for heating water and cooking so long as everything else is electric as mine is. Cooking with gas is so much better, as you can leave a pan or pot on its burner after you turn it off, you cannot do that with electric because the element doesn't cool fast enough. Water heats faster and lasts longer with gas also. If you have a gas furnace your bill will most likely be considerablly higher due to gas prices, but heat will be more efficient and will acclimate faster, your option on which is your descision. Propane is approximately $3.00 a gal here. Not sure about natural gas.

For heating- a Heat Pump is now the Cheapest method- Propane is most expensive.
Prices on everything is going up, so its hard to say- if I build new again, I will op for the Heat Pump. and total Electric- the game has changed from the day Natural gas was cheap.

What you should do is ask around. Like here in Kentucky it is really expensive to have gas anything. My house is powered by all electricity and my bill is only $30 a month compared to my neighbor who bought all brand new gas powered stuff for his house. (we had a boom when gas was really cheap for a year or so) and he pays something like $150 a month. So just ask around ask people you work with and whatnot

depends on where you live. but in most U.S. cities it is gas. electric is more expensive to make and distribute. gas - all ya need is a pipe and a match!!! HA! some cities can't offer gas because the water table is too high or they just don't have it.

my next home will be as much gas as possible. You'll hear me sayin - Honey, where are those beans?

I personally prefer gas because it's more efficient. I particularly like gas for cooking because you can change your heat setting instantly, electric ranges have too much lag time when you change your setting. In heating the same principle applies, your equipment will work more efficiently because the heat is instant.

electricity costs more to maintain then gas, so there are more 30 dollar an hour jags sitting in trucks, so it's more expensive.

Gas is catching up, though..

You best also add a wood burning or pellet stove and trade & balance between them all. Our Utility companies have the general public under control, they can increase rates anytime they want too ! It is a WASH between them both. They have highs and lows, it also depends on the season too.
