the object of the game is to DODGE the ball so therefore called Dodge ball

Because the object to the other team is to avoid being hit by dodging the ball. I guess it just depends on your perspective.

well because to win at the game you have to dodge the ball being chucked at you... hence dodge ball and by the way that was a fabulous movie!
