Help! I need a firewall. but my PC won't cooperate.?

Question

I only have windows firewall right now. I have tried to download and use both Zonealarm and Sygate firewalls, they download and install fine but afterward when I restart my laptop(Compaq V5005us Win XP SP2) I get a blue screen that says-page fault in non paged area- and under it it says if I have installed any new saftware to uninstall it. I uninstall and it is fine. I am running Avast antivirus and Spybot search and destroy also. But really need firewall.

No, I only installed one at a time. I had the same problem with both firewalls. I tried Zonealarm first, then Sygate, but had same prob with both. Just need an idea why, so I can fix it.

Also I had windows firewall turned off but not uninstalled

you need to uninstall the windows firewall that prevents others.

Did you install both firewalls together. They will not work together remember only one firewall at a time. It's all you need. I recommend Sygate. It is the best. It also might be a good idea to disable the Avast just while you are installing the firewall. I don't know if the sygate is still free It might be the web site version doesn't work. First of all u must have 1 firwall and 1 antivirus if u have 2 in any one this will cause problems to the pc so if ur pc cannot cooperate try openening windows in safe mode and unistall all firewalls u got and install a new firewall

You can't run spybot and avast with zone alarm. Spybot is trouble anyway. Was it the freebie? Get rid of it, but you also have to go into system registry to get rid of it! (only if you know what you are doing otherwise get a tech)
ZoneAlarm is all you need totally. Get the Suite and "Pay for it" you will be protected on every level including Anti Spyware and Virus Protection.

You really shouldn't have 2 firewalls. One is sufficient. Before you do anything, you should research under www.bleepingcomputer.com. it is a great resource for computer security.
Oh, and always use Firefox or Opera to browse. IE is prone to infections, spywaare, etc.

AVG Free Antivirus
Spybot
Adaware
Spywareblaster

You should only have one antivirus and one firewall.

hi, i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
