Because she killed Zach's real mother and her and her husband covered it up. Then the neighbor sent her a letter saying she knew what she did. she couldn't take the guilt and committed suicide.

She and her husband had kidnapped Zack as a baby because Zack's mom was a druggie. The mom came to get Zack and said she would tell the cops. Mary Alice and the mom fought and the mom was killed.
