therefore, i miss taking them on purpose for a couple of days consecutively - just so i don't feel the sickness. I'm already overwhelmed with extreme morning (or all-day) sickness and fatigue, and taking my prenatals only make it 100x worse. However, i feel really bad about not taking them, yet i still continue to skip multiple days until im "ready" to take them again. Does anyone know personally how bad this is/ the effects and what, if anything, should i do?

Give your doctor a call and let him/her know how they make you feel. There are all different kinds of vitamins out there.

You also need to take them with food. I actually took mine at bedtime, with a snack and it worked out better because I fell asleep and then didn't feel anything.

As fo the sickness, try eating smaller meals throughout the day. Saltines can be your best friend along with flat ginger ale or soda. Even take them to bed with your. Before getting up in the morning eat a few saltines and drink a little of the flat soda/ale. Let it settle before getting up and then have a little more of them before eating breakfast.

Eat whatever sounds appetizing to you even if it's not a "normal" breakfast food. Every couple of hours get something into your stomach though. It will help a lot with the nausea.

Also buy some starlight mints (those red and white hard candies sold by I believe Brach) and you can suck on them too (real peppermint sticks work good too. The peppermint is a natural thing that helps to settle stomachs. It did wonders for mine!

Good luck!

Well I've seen very healthy babies born while the mothers have taken no prenatal pills at all. Ask your doctor about trying a different type of prenatal pill. The also have chewables if you have a problem with swallowing them. But I took Women's One A Day for about the first 4 months of my pregnancy because I didn't think I was pregnant, I though I needed a energy boost by working 10 hour shifts 5 days a week. It didn't do any harm to my baby, I think it helped because she was a wopping 8lbs 9oz and she was not anemic like they thought because I was anemic. So I personally believe vitamins are vitamins. But tell your doc. and ask for a different kind.

Prenatal vitamins are not specifically for the baby. The baby gets all of its nourishment from you. The prenatal vitamins are to replenish your body. BUT that does not mean it is ok to not take them. Your body will suffer from not taking them. You do not get all of the vitamins you need from your food unless you follow the food pyramid everyday religiously. But there are other options. I know personally my prenatal vitamins make me gag every time I take them. Not because I cant take a pill but because the kind that I take is called Optinate. It is 2 pills a day. One is a vitamin pill and the other is a gel cap. The gel cap smells and tastes like rotten fish. I cant stand it. At first I told my self that it is good for the baby and the baby needs it. But I began to do like you and just not take them until I got up enough courage to. So I talked to my doctor and he suggested taking Flintstones Complete Vitamins. He said that you will get the same vitamins that are in prenatals but they wont taste bad and they wont make you sick on your stomach. I hope this helps you. And just remember that you are not alone. Alot of moms go though this. GOOD LUCK.

Talk to your doctor.

Your OB/GYN might prescribe a special prenatal, called Premesis, that's formulated especially for women with nausea. It's less likely to make you sick.

You can also talk to your doctor about NOT taking prenatals and instead making a big effort to eat right. After all, the vitamins are just "insurance" in case you don't.

I had anemia, but I didn't want to take extra iron because of the side effects. My doctor and I agreed that I would pay special attention to what I ate, trying to increase my iron intake, and that if my levels stayed the same or went up, I could skip the pills. And it worked.

I also took Premesis. And it worked for me.

The responsible thing to do is to talk to your doctor and come up with a plan that protects your baby AND keeps you as comfortable as possible.

Good luck.

Hi... congrats on your pregnancy and I know how you're feeling. Everything made me sick during pregnancy. Does your prenatal vitamin include iron in it? The iron was making me sick. Have your Dr change to seperate prescriptions. One for an iron-free vitamin and the other being iron... iron comes in a few forms... that way you can find out what form does not make you sick and keep taking your multi-vitamin. Also, take it with liquid and with food, preferably after lunch maybe...Best wishes. It will pass. :)

I have had two children. With my first the prenatals always made me sick so i quit taking them, and my son was born happy and healthy. He was 2 weeks early, and weighed 9lbs 1oz was 21 inches long. My second child I didn't take the prenatals at all. She was 10 days early weighed 7lbs 1oz, and is still very healthy. She is 10months old now and weighs over 20lbs. As long as you eat a variety of healthy foods and you are generally healthy don't worry about the prenatals. The doctor will always tell you to take them. Don't fret it. Just eat healthily.

they can change your prescription. they can also prescribe things that will take care of the morning sickness and fatigue that you feel. Check with your ob/gyn. If you don't have one yet, get some advice from one. It will help. This is not bad unless you are depriving yourself from some of the things the baby will need to develop... for instance, if you aren't getting enough calcium in your body, your body will take what you would have used and give it to the baby. More cavities that way. Your body is an amazing machine, but it will take from you what it needs to create the other life you are getting ready to release into the world.

hi, my wife is also pregnant right now. we don't use the prenatal vitamins, for the reason of they hurt her stomache, what we do use is Flinstones vitamins, 2 a day, and most important is Folic acid, they have 2 different milligrams that you can purchase, i suggest the higher one i think its 400 but you need to take that, only 1 tab 1 a day, and that should make you feel better, and take care of the baby.

so did mine. i took perscription strength vitamins with my first pregnancy and they made me really sick. some doctors will let you try out different kinds until you find one you can deal with. mine wouldnt though so i just suffered.
with my second pregnancy i was living in japan where they dont do prenatal vitamins so i brought over the counter ones from the US. they didnt make me sick at all and still contained a lot of good stuff for me and baby. you could try them on the days you dont take the strong ones.
my baby turned out great and he is now almost three months old!

the ones i took were---spring valley prenatal. i got them at walmart.

That happened to me. I thought it was the pregnancy making me sick until I went out of town and forgot my vitamins. Boy did I feel great. I told my Doctor and ended up trying several different kinds before I found one that was good for me.
