There are many factors involved with what you are saying.

If we were to ban smoking altogether, that would mean no more BBQs, all vehicles that burn oil and send out plumes of smoke are off the road...it goes on and on and the list can get pretty ridiculous.

We are creatures of the enviroment, which means we are at the mercy of everything . Do you work in a factory? Oil mist from machinery can do just as much damage to the lungs as cigarettes. Do you work for a company that produces chemicals with noxious fumes? Guess what, more lung damage. How about waiting on the highway during rush hour? Ever think what the exhaust is doing to you?

Don't forget about nature...volcanoes spewing sulfuric acid into the atmosphere...yup, you're breathing it in.

The unfortunate thing, I've buried more people that died of lung disease that DIDN'T smoke than those that did.

the "food pipe" is the esophagus.

Some of your statistics are rather strong. Since more than 80% of us die of heart attack, stroke, or cancer, the "20-25 times higher risk of developing cancer" and "2-3 times higher risk of heart attack" don't add up to me. Maybe "...developing cancer" before 55 and heart attack before 55, something like that.

You left out how smoke ages the skin, especially in the face, and increases eye problems, particularly premature cataracts. There may be a connection between smoking and gastroenterological problems, too.

Most people know that they are harming themselves and other whan they smoke. But knowing and stopping are 2 different ball-games altogether,
Smoking leads to a neurological/mental addiction. & Unless the mind or the emotional unbalance is set right, the body will not respond properly to the comand from the mind to stop smoking.

Of course, the best solution to smoking is not to allow the first smoke to ever get into our bodies, specially those that have not yet smoked.

Also, smokers and all their smoke breaks are an incredible drain on the economy, and the uncollected medical bills of smoking related illnesses could balance the budget. Not to mention it is obviously self destructive behavior in most people that is generally accompanied by self loathing and a general apathy for life.

Actually I did know that and guess what? I am still a smoker because it's my right and it's my choice. I am a responsible smoker however and don't toss my butts out the window nor do I smoke in my house.

There's nothing the zealotry of the newly reformed. I'm betting that you just quit smoking recently.
FWIW the notion that secondhand smoke is deadly is a great Big Lie.

Very good pionts...

A federal judge recently declared that tobacco companies are to put a label on cigarette packages which reads "Cigarettes are addictive."

I hope many people read your post here and make the healthy choice to quit smoking.

Yes, as well as an awful odor from the smoke. I've recently quit, and feel so much better.
