Do you think it's a rugged place with things like kidnapping or robbing common and not a very safe place to live??

Phoenix has one of the worst air qualities in the country. My daughter goes there for a few days every few months to visit her father and always ends up in bad asthma attacks. She can go for months with only minor problems with her breathing, then when she goes there she comes home in really bad shape. When she's in Phx and I talk to her on the phone, I can hear her wheezing. I have talked to several other people who say their asthma does the same there. Bad air. If you have no pulmonary problems, this answer won't matter to you. If you do, make note of it, it could help.

Well, I've lived in Phoenix my entire life (61 years) and I can tell you that Phoenix used to be a great place to live. That was before everyone in the entire world decided to move here. The desert used to be beautiful, now it's buried under thousands of tacky homes. The weather used to be cooler, now it's going up every year because of the "heat island effect" and other causes. (Heat Island Effect: when asphalt, concrete, and buildings reflect heat back up into the atmosphere instead of it's being absorbed into the ground.) There has been a severe drought going on in this state for at least five years and everyone, including the government, acts as if nothing is happening. Phoenix is a staging area for "mules" (illegal alien smugglers) to stash their "goods" until they can send them on their way. Many illegals move here which has caused a huge upswing in crime. The air pollution has become much worse since I was a girl. Traffic is insane. I try not to drive more than five or ten miles to do anything if I can help it. I wouldn't live in a home with a Home Owners Association if it were given to me. People think that they can bake in the sun for hours, skin cancer and wrinkles are their reward. In the summer you have a "window of opportunity" of about four hours everyday when you can do something outside without getting a heat stroke. There are so many new people moving in and out here that you can live in your house for twenty years and never meet your neighbors. Oh, there is ALWAYS some portion of street or streets that are torn up here. So there is ALWAYS some part of town with congested traffic. (Been this way for as long as I can remember.)

There are things you need to know about Phoenix which I learned while living there for about six weeks during June and July.

It is hot in the summer time and you need to keep the airconditioning going 24 hours a day. On the other hand you never need to turn on the heater.

The cold water tap always gives you hot water.

You can't open doors and windows because it is too hot outside. So if you like fresh air you are out of luck.

The people are polite and very nice. I did not see anyone wearing junky clothing like they wear in the San Francisco bay area. They seem to take pride in themselves. Teenagers are polite and well groomed.

They seem to be trying to update their roads and there is a lot of road construction going on so traffic is congested.

Most if not all of the new and recently built homes are in subdivisions which have a homeowner's association. I was in the market for a new home but couldn't find one that was available for occupancy in a reasonable period of time.

Wow, "ELLEN J" sure has a lot of negative to say about Phoenix, but oddly, she still lives there after 61 years!!!! ;)

Phoenix ROCKS in my opinion!

Yes,it is hot as hell, and yes, you must be in good physical shape to really enjoy it, but the rewards are great! Phoenix, and most areas of Arizona have a totally unique "flavor" to them, and are unlike ANY other city or state in the USA!

If you can't take the heat, but really want to live in AZ, I strongly suggest Flagstaff, Prescott or Verde Valley.

It's true by the way that air quality, and expansion, and freeway traffic have gotten worse, much worse, but all big cities have their problems :)

Overall, I LOVE Phoenix, and hope to return there someday! (I am living in WA for the time being......)

Any place is nice that you feel comfortable in, but there are several things you will have to get use to, one of course the heat but the other which is a big problem for some people, me for one is the dryness, your nose always feels full, but there is nothing in it when you blow your nose, and the other is your throat, same as Las Vegas, we call it VDT, Vegas dry throat, ugggahhhhh, I hated it moved to florida where you could breath freeley, but if your from a desert area anyway then Phoenix will be fine, just a lot of traffic..........................

I like to visit Phoenix but I personally wouldn't want to live there....I like a city that's a bit more 24 hour than that.

I heard it's nice in Arizona and the houses are easy to afford. However, it is very hot most of the time. And they're constanlty rattleshakes, gila monsters, tarantulas, scorpions, and other venomous creatures wandering into people's yards.

I have never lieved there. I know of a family who does and they say it's a nice area except for the mexican gangs which are nightly involved in shootings.
They love weather, snow and all but it's no place to raise a family.

I have never lived there, but when I visited I liked it. Yes, it is hot, but I have lived in hot places and I have lived in cold places, and you get used to it.
