Preppy (also spelled preppie) is a chiefly American adjective or noun traditionally used to describe the characteristics of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants (WASPs) who attend or attended major private, secondary university-preparatory schools commonly associated with New England and the northeastern United States. These characteristics include particular subcultural speech, vocabulary, accent, dress, mannerisms, etiquette, and life view. In 1980, Lisa Birnbach wrote the Official Preppy Handbook, a tongue-in-cheek guide to what she termed "prepdom." The term "preppy" is similar in formation to hippie or yuppie, and had great currency in the 1970s and 1980s. The term first reached a wide audience in the 1970 film Love Story, where Ali MacGraw's character uses it as a derisive term of endearment.

Originally a preppy was a rich kid who went to a private prepatory school. The guys wore the Izod alligator shirts and plaid shorts. They made the color pink okay for guys to wear. The girls wore little sweater set things. You could picture them playing tennis or something like that, and people called them Biffs and Buffys!

Preppy is someone who wears polo shirts and goes to country clubs. Usually they are considered "popular' to a certain extent, and wear clean-cut clothing. Some are considered affluent as well and are considered well-groomed in that they have a clean haircut, etc.

"Preppie" means a prepatory school student. Prep schools are a bit conservative and very affluent. That type of school is preparing you to go to an Ivy League, or similar, private college.

Someone who dresses really nice with clothing brands like American Eagle, Hollister, and Abercrombie & Fitch. They are usually really smart in school. Some are snobby, but some are really friendly, just depends on the person. That's my definition of it lol

I usually think of a white guy in khakis, in polo shirts, with penny loafers (with the pennies in) an ascot or pastel sweater tied around his shoulders
