For the past 9 months, I've worked every other weekend as a security guard at an independent living community for seniors. I've taken on several extra days as well, including many holidays.
The problem here is, the guy that works for me asked if I could come in on my weekend off and fill his shift because he has important issues to tend to then, and cannot move them to another day. He works 730a-330p, then I work 330p-1130p. I'd be MUCH more inclined to help this guy out if he didn't have the early shift, because getting up at the crack of dawn is a big inconvenience for me and not my time of day. On the other hand, it seems like he would be in a bind if I didn't - though I don't know if he's asked others as well or not.
What would you do? I'm not obligated to take on extra shifts, but still..

If you feel like the guy would do it for you. then i would do it. if you don't think he would have your back in the same situation. then prob. not. and you can read people that way. you should know what type of guy he is. and if its just this once it won't hurt you. will put extra money in your pocket. just don't let him make a habit of it
if i had nothing else to do i would. i'm not a morning person either. at all. but money is money and its just this once

Cut a deal with him, you will work it, if he works for you later. Get it in writing, and put it on the schedule, and if there is a boss, get the bosses' permission [did you say he worked for you?] That way, you can get some rest after a double. And you don't get into any trouble. Another question, will it cause a problem for you to get overtime working for him? Some places have a rule that they won't pay overtime if you are covering a shift for someone. Check it out before you agree. If you're the boss, no problem. If not, better ask. And be careful of trade welshers, they trade, and then do not show up for their end of the deal, and guess who gets in trouble, and it sure isn't the welsher. Thats why I said, get it in writing, and give it to a boss.
But it is your decision, if you can't do it, gee, I had plans with the family works, but don't be expectiong any help from any co-workers if you get in a bind,it would be a little rude to ask after you said no.

I'd say do it this one time. That way he'll owe you, and if you're ever in a bind you can call the favor in. If you refuse, he'll be less likely to help you out if you need it. Besides, the extra money probably wouldn't hurt, and getting up at the crack of down for one weekend isn't that bad. As long as he doesn't make a habit of it.

If it were me, I would consider weather or not in affected my current plans for that day, and if it didn't, go ahead and take the shift, because it is helping someone out, and you may need someone to be there for you later on :)

well, you seem to be a really helpful colleague..and I'm not like that...however, considering that you are in this situation, I feel that if you think that you'll be able to work for so long continuously, then you should..even if it's not your time of the day...it's really nice on your part to think so much about this..even if you don't cover his shift, don't worry...you'd still possess this quality of helping others...keep it up!!

I would tell him I'm sorry but I just can't work that shift. You will have to ask someone else. And leave it at that.
There's nothing to feel guilty about.

Personally, I always take extra hours. You'll get payed for it, and look like a "team player".
