You might try Orson Scott Card. His book "Ender's Game" is one of my faves, although most would call it SF and not fantasy. However, I recommend it, as well as the sequel "Speaker for the Dead," which is more fantasy than SF.
I also enjoyed the first three books of the "Dragonriders of Pern" series by Anne McCaffery.

I grew up on Michael Moorcock's Elric Sagas, the Dragonlance Chronicles, for almost slapstick fantasy Robert Aspirin's Myth series, and a mix of both hard fantasy and humor you cant go wrong with Piers Anthony's Xanth series

She writes a little young (for teens), but Diana Wynne Jones has good books if you like ones about alternate universes. I would reccomend you take a look on amazon or something even if you don't think you'd like her because of the age group she writes for.

piers anthony "Incantations of immortality" a series of 7 books that is under the premise of being current day if we had magic, and people ran offices of death, time, war, fate, mother nature, good and evil. really good books with riddles inside to make you think-intersting characters.I adore this series-it starts with book one-On a pale horse- it focuses on the incantation of death or the grim reaper.
