The flaw in your question is that it assumes there must be a reason.
A little presumptuous for my tastes.
Also, the "Anthropic Principle" applies here. That is, only intelligent beings that came into existence would ask "Why?".
Those that do not exist are the only ones who would be able to ask "Why is there nothing?"

to me this is the right answer because obviously the why not did not win the argument, thus why not has no answer and it in turn is the answer that you're looking for.
