It is better to try different things than to sit on the edge of your bed in your 60's telling yourself " I 'shoulda' done it." now don't get me wrong, calif is another ball game from ohio, but you sound like you have your head on straight, so you have a distinct advantage over someone who has not prepared. And shoot, if it doesn't work out, then at least you know for sure it wasn't the thing to do, and it's not that you will be disowned by your folks and peers in ohio

Go go go! and follow your dreams! But dreams cost. After your rent money is gone then what? You need to find a high paying job to get a nice place in San diego. I'm from los angeles and I know. San diego is beautiful.... Ohio? forget that place man!
After your money starts to go, you may get a rooming house or a roommate. Go to San Diego and go to school to get that degree!

Take half of your money and go West. Ya never know unless you try.... Things in Cal. cost a lot more. If you leave half of your money with your parents they can send you the money to home if it doesn't work-out. Good Luck!

yes,
it's great weather out there but the rent money is about 3 times higher.
Don't let your friends take advantage of you.
If they are asking for a roommate, reconsider.
