Actually they're lying when they compliment you--only you. They're telling the truth to the rest of us.

Not most, but some. When someone compliments you EVERYDAY, they start to get watered down. And, I used to know a woman (at work) who would compliment someone emphatically and as soon as they left, talk nasty about the very thing she complimented them on. That is so low.

Most people? No. I believe they genuinely mean what they say. Once in a while someone may give a compliment with an ulterior motive, but by and large, most people mean it when they give you a compliment.

I don't think it's that they so much lie, it's more like they pick out your best attribute and comment on it to make pleasant conversation. It makes for a more pleasing interaction. And, it helps to reflect a positive comment back on the speaker, which may be the real motive.

It depends on what you did and who you are.
If you are no body, then most people are honest.
If you have something that people wants from you, then most compliments may be just cow dung.
