It tells those who are interested in Bronze Age History how things might've been like for people back then.

Also, the present significance is that it's darn good poetry!

I think the Odyssey teaches us something about arrogance. Odysseus was rather arrogant, he did not listen to his crew on multiple occasions. It also may teach us something about problem solving.
