They have different manufacturers who at first where in competition with each other and now it doesn't matter which format you use. The same thing is starting to happen with Blue Ray DVD and High Definition DVD. I don't think either one is going to be better than the other.

Some dvd burners are only DVD-R compatible and some are DVD+R compatible But most bought nowadays are compatible with both DVD-R and DVD+R It`s the same scenario with the DVD player setbox for the TV DVD-RW and DVD+RW can be written to and erased whereas DVD+R and DVD-R can only be written to once and cannot be erased

It's the way the Data is written... One is written in a certain direction.. and the other in the opposite. DVD+R is better. I'll add to this.

DVD-R/DVD+R are burnable DVDs. You can burn basically anything on them.

DVD-ROM is only readable which is where ROM comes from.. Read Only Memory.

DVD-RW is a burnable DVD that can be re-burned multiple times.. that's where the RW comes from.. rewritable.

DVD+r's are an independent comodity and DVD-r's are owned by the industry.
So buy DVD+R's

some video players will NOT play -r DVDs unless you have a recorder that will finalize it--the +r and +rw's are playable in any dvd player--I came across that problem when i bought a dvd/vcr recorder--one I bought only did -r's and then I couldnt play the disk in my other dvd players--so i bought a recorder that does +r and +rw and they both work in ANY dvd player--WEIRD

DVD-R is for DVD-R drives. If you only have a -R drive, than use those, and visa-versa. They are the same, except I find that +Rs are cheaper.

[DVD-R ] - is a DVD Writer, you can write DVD's with it.

[DVD + R] - is DVD player and a CD writer in one, you can watch dvd's and you can write cd's with it (but not dvd's).
