People believe in god primarily because they see other people who believe in god so they assume it must be true. Spirituality is your relationship with the divine. The divine does not necessarily include any god. Only you can determine for yourself what is true and what your relationship with that divine truth should be. No god and certainly no religion can do it for you. Blindly accepting someone else's dogmatic belief won't help anyone.

You can be spiritual without accepting the existence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but that spirituality cannot take you to the highest realms of spiritual consciousness. To reach the highest spiritual consciousness, its necessary to re-establish our loving service relationship to the Lord.
I think what you mean is why are there organized religions and not just spiritual people. The spiritual methodology established by an avatar of the Lord or His representative such Jesus, usually begins very pure but over the course of time gradually deteriorates after the founder passes away. Fortunately, any sincere and serious seeker can find the true path from any point in time because the Lord is in the heart. When He sees our sincerity, He makes the arrangement for us to meet a realized soul on the path back to Him.

Maybe sometimes believing in god is more comforting, because people can believe that there's someone out there who's got things more or less under control. "God" is a pretty definite being, while just being spiritual puts more of a burden on the person to discover spirituality for herself. But someone who's spiritual might, while not worshipping something they call "God," believe in something greater than himself, like nature or some sort of powerful force. Believing in god can be scary in some ways, too--I don't like feeling like someone might be looking over my shoulder, judging what I do. So I guess I'm somewhere in between right now. I tend to focus more on spirituality than religion, and when I pray, it's not so much to a person/being as it is to a sort of life force that I think is out there somewhere.

How does a spiritual person act. He prays often. He follows the Ten Commandments and the teachings of God. He practices his religion. He doesn't use vulgar language. H e goes to church often. He is kind, charitable and considerate of others. He preaches the word of God. He spreads the word of God as he was commanded by God to do.
In other words, he incorporates God in his daily life. Why does he do all of this if not for the greater love of God? Why does he do all of this if it's not because of his belief in God's existence.
So believing in God and being spiritual go hand in hand. So you can not be spiritual without believing in God. Although one can ponder that you can believe in God without being spiritual.

What does it mean (to you) to be spiritual? Just curious.
I think God puts a face on an otherwise very abstract concept. People like people, we've been programmed that way; so it's preferable if God is personal. We also love to be loved by other people, and what better than to be loved by the greatest being in the universe?

It's called the 'god gene.' I read about some interesting studies of the temporal lobe regions that are 'mis-firing' or giving off 'unbalanced' neuroligical signals. Some of the studies are intrigueing, they can duplicate 'religious experiences' in blind tests of humans.
It was already known that the more primitive limbic system of our brains contain the raw emotion where our religious beliefs spring forth. The development of the cerebral cortex (or the thinking and rational part of the brain) is only a recent development in humans, say the last 40,000 years.
It is also shown that humans under extreme duress, near starvation and in highly emotional stress trigger the 'god-gene' in their brain, a mechanism to survive in a hostile environment.

Organized religion is pretty gross. But I understand why it happens and happened in the past. What makes me believe? I gave up pretending that I didn’t already know my maker. I fell down on my face and begged God to forgive me for living a life denying him. He did. I met Jesus. I got saved. And thats about it. Short answer: I met him. PS your already spiritual or your mind wouldn't think of God. You would just be a machine. Blessings.

Either is nonsense. There is no logical or scientific proof that gods or spirits exist. Different people have different reasons, so one must not overgeneralize. Many people were strongly taught their families' religions when they were kids. Many believe it is wrong to even question such stuff. They have their beliefs in gods programmed into them. They fear anybody who makes them doubt, and they become angry, for that is easier for them to handle than fear. I don't have time to do justice to such a question as this one, but I hope I gave you a few ideas.

like dogs need a master . and so as men need god..
As a human being we're born to this world alone and alone we will die. It doesn't matter how many family or friends we have. it really doesn't matter coz' we know we're all alone in this world. We are a very curious being and curosity leed to confusion and that confusion is all about life and death and this is our weakest point so there lies an imaginary ghost called "god' to whom we think he knows all the answers to our problems and thus me follow him..
