it has to do with "taking back" a word -- taking a word and internalizing it as a badge within a group. those not in the group do not have the same rights of suffering to recapture the word and their use still smacks of the offensive use.

i'm not black and i say it to my friends...did i get beat up...YES I DID! lol just playing welp they told me i can say it to them but not to the ones that i don't know so i guess u have to know that person really well or if you're cool with them

its actually coming back now as it used to be a inside racial affection and now they say ***** or the other affectionitly. its become more common when used friendly than in anger.
