I would presume that the component you have been asked to design is not an actual part that is to be used for "something" but is a part that will clearly show the capabilities of the CNC equipment. I would think that if you had surfaces that are flat (milling), with a flat bottomed pocket in it, with perhaps a series of drilled, threaded and counter bored holes in the pocket, You could have various shapes (e.g. straight or radial) for the profile of this part. You could certainly have straight edges blending into arcs. On lathe work you should include parallel diameters, tapered diameters, grooves/undercuts. You can have internal diameters (bores) with, perhaps internal and external threads. You should include parting off and chamfers.
