What makes a good drumset is how it sounds to you.
Most major companies make very good intermediate drumsets.
Some companies only make "high-end kits"
Tama, Ddrum, Pearl, Yamaha, Mapex, Pulse, Ludwig are all good brands from which to choose.
If you're just buying your first kit make sure you don't skimp on the cymbals. The drums can be tweaked with good heads and proper tuning but the cymbals are what they are.
Zildjan and Sabian have the most variety from which to choose. Although Paiste is right there just a little more expensive.
Remember this one thing and you can't go wrong.
NO MATTER WHAT, EVERYTHING HAS TO SOUND GOOD TO YOU!!
Good Luck and Keep Sticking!!

taylor,

Yes, they are all good/reputable brands of drums. If you're leaning towards purchasing one of these brands, may I offer a few suggestions:
1. What type of music will you be playing?
2. Are you familiar with electronic drums and programming/sequencing?
3. What's your budget like?
4. What's your skill level?

I ask these questions because Tama has a very good line of drums that will take care of the beginner, the advanced student, the semi-pro weeked drummer, and the professional drummer. Tama is based out of Japan, but dealers are worldwide.

ddrum are most noted for their electronic percussion and percussion triggers. A few years ago, they also added a line of acoustic drums. They even have a series for the young, female beginning drummer. Check out this link and see the kit: ddrum.com/diablo_combat_she_punx.htm Their company is based out of Tampa, Florida.

Pulse drums are.....an inexpensive import set. That's the nicest way I can put it. They have many features of more expensive kits, but I'm just not sure of the quality of these drums or their hardware. However, they are pretty inexpensive. If you're a raw beginner...trying to convince the folks to buy you your first full drum kit...with cymbals, then Pulse drums might be the answer. As an example, here is one of many kits always available on eBay: cgi.ebay.com/Like-New-5pc-Pulse-Drum-Set-with-Cymbals-and-seat-Blue_W0QQitemZ130018241256QQihZ003QQcategoryZ10175QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hope this helps, and best of luck!
