Is it that people don't want a challenge or they don't want to put some thought into an answer or are they afraid of looking stupid if their answer isn't world class?
I mean if I ask SHOULD I KILL MYSELF? I will get 50 answers to that question. But ask something thought provoking and I would be lucky to get 2 answers.

Because that represents the worldwide tendency. How many well-educated, intelligent and deep-reflexive people exist in comparison with fun-seekers, dumb and just-to-get-the-2-points ones?

1) thought provoking questions require a lot more typing to answer. Some people are doing this at work and can't afford to take the time.
2) I have discovered, that A LOT of people are just trying to rack up points; therefore, the simple one or two word answer moves them on quicker to the next 2 pts.
3) The question may have already received adequate response. The answerer may feel as though they would be "copying" someone else's answer even though it was their original idea.
4)Perhaps the answerer is a terrible typist and they have received much ridicule over it.
5) The question is too emotional or too "close to home" for some. To reply could be exhausting and very time consuming.
6)Some people are stupid and/or they just really do not have an answer.

I agree, I see that, too! I've taken my time and answered a "good" question thoughtfully. There might have been two answers to it, one of them says "two points", the other is mine. I get two votes, "two points" gets one vote.
My other favorite is "Coke or Pepsi?" There will be 75 answers, never mind I've seen that question 75 times since I have been coming here.
But ask a question like, "what legislation is needed to stop global warming", and I see maybe four answers, one would be "who cares?", another would be "need a law to make everbody open their refrigerator doors", one answer would be good, and the last answer, of course, is "two points!"
You are right, some people do not want a challenge, they might come here for just for entertainment, some want to compete, and get that two points. They don't know the answer, or have no opinion on it or just do not care. And no, they don't want to think too hard.
And some of it is the questioner's fault. Sounds like sour grapes, but I found a "good " question, answered it, and for once, stopped to think that I might get a best answer. I saw some of the other answers, and mine was good by comparison. I waited, saw it had been resolved, and went to look at it. The young girl had picked a 2 sentence answer, the same answer most everyone else had given, of a guy, good looking picture. It is her right to pick whatever answer she wanted, and I thought it was funny, and was fine with it, but it pointed out how shallow we are allowed to be here in this anonymous internet world.
You didn't ask what to do about it, but here's my opinion, anyway. Continue to ask thought provoking questions. I read them, and I answer them, if I have an opinion. Others will answer, too. Find and answer other people's good questions, too. Make a consciencious effort to vote for the most thoughtful answer. And do what I am doing. I look at the questions being voted on, and if someone has a good answer, I vote for it. I have noticed that not a lot of people vote.
And I confess, I have asked questions that are not exactly, well, brilliant, and I have answered a couple of those "I'm gonna kill myself" ones. But I really did want to know how to make gravy with the one question, and I wanted to connect to the music lover's of my own age group with another.
So, LOL, here is the real answer to your thought provoking question: "two points!" LOL, I have no idea how many points I have, think I will go look, and then go vote. Sorry, my spellcheck isn't working, again.

Wondering the same thing. I posted two questions today. I received 8 answers on the first one and only 17 on the second one.

I ask questions because I want answers. I guess most people on here are just into it for the pointless points and they have nothing better to do with their time. And the rest, I agree, are too afraid of leaving a real answer because they are not sure of themselves. Which is a shame because I am one that will read all of the answers given on a question that someone else asked so I can learn something.

Admittedly, some of the answers to those crazy questions are fun to read. I enjoy a good laugh too.

LOL i felt exactly the same way. i was asking myself that last night. i think it's because some people would rather get their two points fast than really answer questions-- in which case, they would either easily get tired and fall out of Y! Answers, or obsessively watch their scores go up.

then there are askers who get surprised if you answer their questions at length-- they were actually just fishing for your two cents worth, too. others post a please-no-long-discourse plea right after the question-- they dont even want you to discuss anything, which makes the whole thing more absurd.

then there are those who ask sensible questions. they get some pretty good answers but pick a single word answer of either yes or no anyways.

frustrating, aint it?

Agree with you. The reason is that anyone can answer a simple question like: I need a name for a dog?( you probably get 50 answers in 5 minutes),but not anyone can answer a serious or difficult question. I also think that peoples prefer to answer simple question that doesn't required an opinion, they are really here for the points.

I agree. I think people take the easy route and show stupidity rathern than show intelligence. Also, it could be a generation gap. Younger people tend THINK they are cute and smart, when in reality they are NAIVE and simply DON'T CARE.

I ALWAYS try to answer truthfully and if I do know about a certain subject, I give my best opinion or actual links to help.

I think quite a few people are out for an easy 2 points and stupid questions provide that.

It's a very good point you raise. Maybe people come here to relax and they don't want to think too much. I'm too sleepy to answer this question properly, but I thought I would acknowledge it :)
