Democracy failed in Germany because, although it did grant civil rights to its citizens, it failed to grant financial security and prosperity during the aftermath of WWI. The Weimar republic had few to no options to solve this in the short-term, which led to wide support of the radical Nazis.

The good old French wanted revenge for their butt kicking and convinced other countries to milk Germany dry in paybacks for destruction during the war. As Usual they wanted others to do their work. Naturally the land grab they pulled off did not help things any either. The German government had no resources to pay off the debt and the losses suffered emptied the treasury. We ended up with Roosevelt and they ended up with Hitler.

People need to give the Nazi party credit for getting the country back on it's feet. Just as Roosevelt rebuilt th US, Hitler rebuilt Germany by instilling pride back in the average person. The later perversions done by the Nazi party wiped out the good they did but History should give them some credit for giving hope to the hopeless. Unlike France they worked their way out of the ruble and regained their status as a world power. France floundered until WWII and then collapsed like a deck of cards to the German onslaught.

Since then France has been living off payoffs and putting up a false front of being something more than a third world country in a industrial giant costume. Their recent willingness to head up the UN force in Lebanon with a big 400 more men shows how shallow they are.

it is an exciting question. Democracy and freedom are 2 separate entities. Democracy is the form of government, while freedom pertains to the guy. i think of democracy interior the country has succeeded the place the form of excellent form of others have failed because of the fact it extremely is the 1st democracy favourite with the suited of liberty and freedom for all people no longer in basic terms an elite. because of the fact democracy is a variety of government chosen via a loose people, then your question may be; is the government failing freedom or is freedom failing the government. in my opinion, democracy is the tail on the dogs of freedom. If there's a failure, it ought to in basic terms be democracy failing us. yet each time that occurs, freedom continually corrects it.

Communism is a total failure (as is Socialism). Democracy will live on. You can take that check to the bank and cash it.
