iam on the management team at my job.
i work as hard if not harder than most other employees.
i have moved up the ladder and proven myself.
i run a resturant. friday my general manager who always brags on my ability to run a great shift, said that at times i can be overbearing!!!
i was just trying to make sure that everyone stays busy.cleans, stocks ,etc.
she is over me, but lets people stand around all the time.
the other managers let alot slide.
iam nice. i stand and talk too, but after all is done & clean.
she really bugged me with that comment.
later she said:well i know you are just doing your job.
but i keep hearing her words.
two of the other managers stay on the telephone to friends etc even when we are busy like out the door!!!
it makes me so upset.
i give 110%.
any advice????

Lighten up a little. Being good at your job and taking pride in it is good, but constantly being on your employees and being domineering will only make them resent you, which will turn around make them less productive eventually. Your boss is telling you to be a little more easy-going. Making your employees hate you and hate coming into work will only be counter-productive in the end. Happy employees are good employees. Don't treat them like children. Give them a little latitude and autonomy to make some decisions on their own. This makes them feel more invested in their jobs and in the business. Feeling trusted makes most people take pride in their jobs and makes them want to do better.

It generally means someone who comes on very strong, gives people little room to "move", and seems to want to dominate.

It may not so much be that you try to keep on top of which workers are doing what, but it could be the way your do it (as with an "overbearing" tone of voice). A management skill is to be able to direct what the employees will be doing in a way that comes across business-like and polite, rather than just kind of "telling people what to do" without worrying about a polite tone of voice or by using words that are too strong.

Another possibility may be not that you want to make sure people stay busy, but what your idea of "busy" is. Are you thinking up stuff for them to do just to make sure they never have a free minute or two?

Some people are quite used to managing others in a polite, diplomatic way while - at the same time - allowing them a little freedom at times. If you're coming across as "on their backs" all the time, that's what the problem is.

Just some loose thoughts on the matter.....

In your case it seems to lean toward being a perfectionist... the way it sounds you might as well sleep at your work with your status as on-call 24/7... you would be called a "brown-noser" here in the U.S. (which means "A S S kisser" pretty much... hence the "brown" part of the word).
