The current standard was set forth in 1992 in Planned Parenthood v. Casey (link below), which partially overturned Roe v. Wade
The standard is defined as the "undue burden" test. No regulation can impose an undue burden, meaning a total or effectively total obstacle, to a women seeking that medical procedure.
Some regulation is allowed, as long as those regulations do not make the decision subject to somebody else's veto (no spousal consent) and as long as the regulation does not make it effectively impossible (as applied) for the women to exercise any of her medical options.
South Dakota (and several other states) have passed laws that violate the standard set by the Supreme Court, by declaring abortion illegal in those states. But those state laws are void and invalid under the Supremacy Clause, as long as the current Supreme Court rulings stand.

Yes of course it's still an option! Ever since Roe v. Wade, the supreme court case that happened in the '70's, abortion's been legal. People have tried to put limits on it (and some limits do exist), but unlessl Roe v. Wade is overturned, abortion can't be made completely illegal in the US- which is a good thing! Unfortunately, the supreme court could overturn roe v. wade any time- hopefully they won't.
I hope you don't have to get an abortion yourself, because it's a very trying experience, but if you do want one, know that you still have the right to choose whether you want to keep your baby.

There is nothing sad about it sunshine!
No insults meant here but you see to many little kids not cared for by their parents, to many kids with drug addicted & alcoholic parents, to many kids whos parents dont want them because they had them at such a young age.
Here in Australia, it is legal (in NSW anyway). There is also a pill you can take (not the morning after pill, a termination pill), but its not had the best rap in the media!
There are other options of course, but if termination of pregnancy is the best option for a person then she shall have that right. There is many councilling services offered for both pre & post surgery.
I think its time the bigots gave up their mission & quit trying to outlaw something that is a safe method for a woman to keep control of her life. What about the baby they say? Well, what about the baby when it is not wanted nor loved? What about the baby being put up for adoption & years later wanting to find its natural mother (for many reasons such as medical history & a sense of belonging) just to be hurt deeply because the mother doesn't want to know anything about it.
This is the year 2006. Wake up people, its not anybody elses choice but the two people involved in the conception of the child.
I have a child whom I adore & love with every ounce in me, but I also have had a termination of pregnancy, there is nothing sinful about it. It can quite often be the pinicle point in a womans life.
There, had my say, as I said, no offence intended, I just get really peeved when people are so closed minded about this issue.

I can't believe some people think the government never prevented women from getting abortions.I suppose some of them weren't born when Wade v Roe was argued but I wasn't born when they were trowing Christians to the lions and I still know about that.

I once attended a meeting for family members of alcoholics. A woman who was attending asked the group for advice regarding her love relationship. After a dozen people chimed in, I had to shake my head and wonder if she would ever consider the source. Call your local Planned Parenthood. All of their information is accurate, and contrary to fanatic opinion, they don't make anyone do anything. They will simply provide you with information.

Yes it is still an option. The government has imposed certain time restrictions, but if you catch it quick, it is perfectly legal and the clinics are still operation in spite of the Catholic church and all those who say. Do it my way or i will blow you up.

It depends what state you live in. As far as i know, only South Dakota has made it illegal. Though there are few situations where abortion is appropriate, i am pro-life.
