Neither. The chicken is the current result of millions of years of evolution from previous species which also laid eggs. There is good fossil evidence that most birds evolved from dinosaurs and/or reptiles, both of which laid eggs. Egg layers in turn evolved from more primitive species which deposited soft-shelled eggs, probably in water (as in fish or other marine animals). They in turn evolved from animals which secreted sperm and ova directly into the water, where fertilization occurred.
To ask "which came first" is the same as asking "where's the missing link?" and in the contect of evolution theory is meaningless. Once self-replicating nucleic acids developed, there was never a "first" anything. Evolution is a gradual progress, not a series of steps in which "Poof! There's a human!" suddenly appears in the gene pool of a society of apes.

Due to a slight mutation, something that was a precursor to a chicken laid an egg that became the first chicken.
This idea is not just for atheists, it is the stated belief of the Catholic church and many other religious doctrines.

The egg came first - animals who laid eggs evolved millions of years before the chicken. Birds evolved from dinosaurs, and dinosaurs laid eggs, as did the reptiles, amphibians and fish that came before them.

evolution creating the right atmosphere to allow this species to grow it was probably evoled from a single cell organism. so the organism came fist. hehe
