Here's the REAL answer
Format using the FAT system. If you're formatting with the Mac, open up Disk Utility (located in Applications > Utilities) and select "MS-DOS" as the desired file system. It will automatically format between FAT-16 and FAT-32, depending on the size of the drive (>4 GB is FAT-32).

it's impossible, because mac sucks.
Unless you mean a portable USB hard drive, that you could do. But if you want an internal IDE or SATA harddrive to work with both, there's just no dice, because mac's structure is so radically different and all their stuff is proprietary.

try partishening the hard drive, not sure it'll work for mac but it does for linex
