I just bought a new Western Digital 250GB external hard drive, and I was wondering if anybody knew how to partition the drive into 125GB for Windows and 125GB for Mac. So, how do I do it?

Use Disk Utility on the Mac. (Applications > Utilities)

If you're wanting to completely share the hard drive, format as a FAT-32 and both OS will have access to all 250 GB. In Disk Utility, select MS-DOS, and it will automatically format FAT-32 (instead of FAT-16)

well, the problem that you have been facing is that the external hard disk you want to partition into two parts. you can try having the use of partition Magic 8.0.
this software allows partition to be done and split the partition into two parts. Partitioning the hard disk into two parts will be quite easy because the software will guide properly.there is no need for the Operating Disc to split the hard disk into 2 parts. As from the interpretation of your question, there is no windows operating system needed. the need is to split to allow easy classification of data. So one option that i know of is the Partition magic 8.0

well, the most safe way is to use partitioning software.
one above recomemmended Partition magic.
but i think disk director by acronis is better.
it's cheaper, more functional and safer.
