Follow the school's dress code for starters. If they don't allow mini skirts, you don't want to be stuck in gym shorts or sweats after you wore one to school.
Then look for styles that are complementry to you. Ignore what the head cheerleader is wearing, she probably doesn't have the same body and coloring as you. You can be as beautiful as you let yourself be. In middle school, everybody wanted to fit in, and it's the same in high school. But in most high schools, there is a bigger diversity of people to choose to be friends with. The nerd in middle school may be the class president in high school.
Things to avoid:
Skirts
Dresses
Tube tops
Ultra-short shorts
High Heels
You don't want to look like you are trying too hard. You also don't want to show tons of skin, it gets you a rep of being easy, even if you aren't. Skirts and dresses are fine for a once in awhile thing, but not everyday. You never know when somebody is behind you on the stairs. Heels will kill your feet by the end of the day.
Go to your local stores and look at what's on the racks now. Try on the things that you like, not what somebody else is wearing. What looks good on them may not look good on you. Some things look bad on the hanger, but good on you. Others may look good on the hanger, but bad on you. You have to learn what cuts you can wear, and what you can't. For example, I can't wear an empire waistline in a shirt or dress. Experiment with different things until you find what you like. Get good colors for you in tops, and plenty of jeans. Denim doesn't go out of style.
Skinny jeans are the new "in" right now, but unlesss you are super skinny with almost no hips, I'd avoid them. They aren't flattering on most women. Get a narrower boot cut over a wide flare, or a straight cut, not tapered. Naturals and nudes are in, but don't over-do, they make some women (including me) washed out. For any animal prints, one peice of clothing at a time, or no more than two accessories. If your shoes and top are zebra, you may end up looking like you are wearing the animal.
If you don't know what colors and styles would look good on you, post another question with coloring and body type. We'll try to answer to the best of our ability.
Good Luck!

The older you get, the less frivolous you dress. High schoolers have 4 years left to get the grades for college, they have less time to coordinate outfits. They have to keep in mind that if they want their instructors to give them good college references, they have to earn that. So dress appropriately for the weather, the classes you're taking, mind the dress code, be comfortable, not to sexy, and you should do well. Clean and neat works well in high school.
For instance, if you are a science major, don't wear a long sleeved blouse with lace around the cuffs in a dissection class, don't wear your hair down in your face around a Bunson burner. It sounds too simple, but you would be surprised how people do not think. Make the instructor think you are all business by how you dress.
Cutesy is out in high school.I hear prep is in this year. Prep is a good choice for high school.
Good luck with your freshman year. I loved mine.

from my experience, there wasn't much of a change... just wear what you feel comfortable in no matter what school you're in is always how it's been. the only thing that i can remember happening fashion-wise is that as i got older, people stopped dressing up for the first day of school, and that definitely ends in high school if it hasn't already in your town. so wear something cute & comfy for the first day (but if you're nervous about standing out too much, wear something conservative like a nice shirt and jeans) and check out what other people are wearing... then you'll notice any changes that might've happened. but generally the rule is that there are no rules (erm, except for no bikinis and stuff like that). whatever makes you happy is good. :)

Just make sure you somewhat match. It dosent have to match, it just has to go. And dont directly copy what someone else wears. If you like it create your own version of it without it being obvious.

if you want to look cute and yet stand out a little from the crowd go with cute jeans (especially skinny jeans), sweaters, totes shoes and jewelry. just go to the mall to like forever21, delias or h&m and pick out something cute that catches your eye
