Terrorism can be annihilated if the people will unite to fight bastards planning to sow violence by reporting their suspicious activities and safehouses.

There won't be a clear victory, as long as fighting continues, supporters of the war can look forward to the time 100 years in the future when people realize there hasn't been a terrorist attack in the last 20 years, so it must be over. I also don't think it is losable, even if terrorists get nuclear weapons and blow up 4 or 5 cities. That would be bad, but I just see it making a bit more support to nuke Arab places, a bit less people saying that's ridiculous. The same idea applies to any damage inflicted on terrorists, the more damage to Arab countries, the more recruits.

It is absolutely not winnable.

First, there's the simple fact that violence rarely puts a stop to violence. The only time that happens is when one side is so utterly devastated that they have nothing left to fight with.

Second, there has always been terrorism, since the dawn of civilization. What we call terrorists used to be called names like "bandits", "brigands", "pirates" and the "barbarian horde". The names have changed, and so have the available weapons, but the threat has always been there.

There will always be terrorists and criminals. At least as long as there is hatred and fear in the world. Living in terror and panic, sacrificing our liberties to cower like rabbits, surrendering the freedoms this country was founded on in the name of security -- these will not make the threat go away. Neither will violence.

So, we can never win the war on terror. Because as long as there is war, there will be terror.

No, it is not winnable. We lost the war in Vietnam by the same assumption that we could dominate the guerillas and came away in a hurry with our tails between our legs...after almost 20 years of trying. Nazi Germany was savaged by the underground in France and Holland. There is no control. I can make a weapon secretly...from household products...booby traps...how could we defend ourselves? I don't need guns or bullets to cause fear. It is time that we begin to deal with others as rational people, but also a time for the US to leave nations decide their own destiny. Our security as a nation is important but, we supported Saddam, the Shah of Iran, Batista, Ngo Dien Diem, Noreiga, etc etc...with hard US cash, weapons and such...let the people of those nations decide for themselves. It is unrealistic to think that the US can mandate policy to others when indeed the control of many domestic situations in America are out of control, i.e. illegals and the flood of drugs moving across the border from Mexico...they only supply about 90%...what's missing here?

Any type of violence could be construed as terrorism. So in essence, the war on terrorism is a war on violence. Violence will never go away, and I think it's a little ironic that you fight a war (violently) to get rid of violence, so no, it is not winnable, at least how it is defined now.

One cannot declare war on an abstract idea, and anyone who is stupid enough to do it regardless - like George W. Bush - cannot be taken for serious.

And of course such a war on an abstract idea can never be won.

But that is really the point. Bush wants a perpetual war that goes on and on, in order to create never-ending profits for his friends and supporters in the arms industries. And such war also keeps the oil and other energy prices very high, which benefits the Bush and Cheney families (as their money comes from oil and energy businesses).

By the way, since war by its very nature creates terror, a "war on terror" is not only illogical and absurd, but also a contradiction in itself. Bush should be impeached and locked up in an institution for the criminally insane.

To be winable, it must be able to change peoples ideas and that is impossible. We do not and never have had any business attacking Iraq, It is all based upon lies and the end result is a canceling of our constitutional rights. That is the real reason for the terror. To destroy the freedoms we used to have and the rights we used to have.

9/11 happened because we were giving billions of dollars to Israel. They are the real eneme of peace. Sadam was accepting Euro-dollars for his oil instead of Our dollars and we could not tolerate that. It is still all about oil.

This started with the Clinton Administration and has escalated ever since. Tapping phones, humiliating people who want to travel by air and all in the name of safety. It is only going to get worse. not better.

Winning, in the sense of an identifiable endpoint, is no more obtainable than winning the war against bank robbery or drunk driving. The war on terror will continue indefinitely. But small victories are possible. And to continue the fight is just as essential as fighting any other sort of criminal act.

no, its not a war of terrorism or equality or justice. Its a war of the rich, and how they can make more money. Look who's in charge of the country! The head of an oil company, and it just so happens that oil is the main export of the country we have invaded. Coincidence?????

You can't win militarily against terrorism. You kill one he becomes a martyr and ten more terrorist take his place and there are always more weapons to be had. The only winning solution is remove a terrorist motivation and not that tired b.s. they're out to kill everybody ! There real motives vary in Iraq it's our occupation and sectarian revenge for past grievances. In Lebanon it's revenge for Israel's past occupation of Lebanon and Israel's occupation of Palestine defuse those which is hard and delicate work and the terrorist will no longer be supported by the local population and when that happens the terrorist cells dry up .
