Which job would require an early morning start (4/5am) and finish by lunchtime (1pm) and necessitate use of a 4x4 pickup? Living in central Edinburgh, i'm sure the possibilities are very limited.

Maybe he just likes driving a 4x4 pickup. That should have nothing to do with what kind of job he has. He could be working a morning shift stocking shelves in a grocery store. Bus Driver, taxi driver, mail carrier. A lot of factories work 24 hours a day. He could have a morning shift. Could be a flexible office, where he doesn't really need to work normal business hours.

hmm - he's not a cop is he? My feelings are transport worker/ newspaper or milk delivery/ maybe airport worker.

How posh is your area because this would allow you to guess his income and narrow it down a fair bit?

4 x 4 vehicles are ubiquitous nowadays so don't let that throw you off the scent. I have, however observed that a high proportion of 4x4 pickup drivers are actually self employed. So there's a good chance he is some sort of self employed electrical chappie.

Newspaper deliveryman
I used to get up at midnight and get home at 5, I went to a neighboring city to pick up newspapers.
The person I delivered them to had similar hours to what you're describing.

His name is Bertie Ollerinshaw, a one-time haggis-trawler Captain, now a semi-retired, but still championship level lamp-post-climber and dog-wobbler for the local council.

Respect is due.

You're a nosey little ***** and the types of job your neighbour might do are endless. At least he/she is a worker and not scrounging off the state.

Maybe he's a gravedigger...or he works for the mob.

Maybe he's independently wealthy and just works part time to get out of the house.

Why don't you just strike up a conversation and ask him?
