Because the people you know are under 25, still in college or high school. At a young age, looks are everything. People are shallow, self-absorbed creatures at teens and very early twenties. They don't have responsibilities like a mortgage, real job, spouse, children, etc... All they have to do is have fun, and go to school part time. Maybe 10 hours a week job at the local fast food joint, which they don't care if they keep it or get fired from it. (Generalization, doesn't apply to everyone, just the materialist ones.)

If the people in question are over 25 or so, then I feel sorry for them. They haven't grown up, they don't have much self esteem, and little to no confidence in their inner self. They probably aren't very happy with their lives as a result.

I also think that some people let themselves get too involved with beauty and fashion. We can't compare ourselves to models, actors/actresses, movie stars, or anybody else famous. They have the money to hire consultents to make them look good, the stylist is on hand at the studio's expense. On screen, somebody else did their hair, makeup, helped pick the best clothes for them. I don't know anyone in the real world that has that kind of money to blow. Even the very wealthy people I know have more important worries than having a personal stylist on hand.

I take very good care of myself, and I do my best to look nice when I go somewhere. But if I have to run to the store Sunday morning for milk to make breakfast, all I care about is if my shoes are tied and I have my money, keys, and wallet.

It's corporate America, and gullible Americans, and the TV media.
Everyone looks so perfect on TV on the commercials and the programs. We want to look like that too. We spend billions of dollars every year just to look pretty.
I read a comment the other day, the gentleman was complaining that he doesn't want to go to the grocery store, because the women[I'm paraphrasing here] look like dogs, and he is offended. What an ego!
It It is the grocery store, and 99.999% of the women there could care less if he is offended or not. But his comment hit home, that is the male expectation, women must look good all the time, and look like a supermodel, just for his viewing pleasure. It is sad that someone can't separate TV from the real world.. I have heard comments from men, how a certain woman should just die, because she isn't pretty, and therefore offensive and doesn't deserve to continue.
So much applause to the Dove Corp, and other companies, who have stopped putting supermodels on the TV, and use real woman to advertise their products. I for one will be buying them.
That marketing strategy is genius. Use our product and feel beautiful, for yourself, not some guy.
