Whenever a fish is passing white, stringy poo it is a sign of bacterial infection. Remove all carbon from the filters and treat the tank with something like maracyn and/or Maracyn II, Or Parasite clear by jungle tablets. Remove the carbon because carbon takes meds right out of the water. You need too treat the fish, before it gets any worse. Contact your local fish store to get a medicated food and water treatment kit.

They are definitely contagious. You need to isolate that goldfish ASAP, and (you're not going to like this) clean the aquarium thoroughly, change the water. Don't pour the old water back in the tank with the fish either. You need to so this even though it's already too late and you're going have to treat all your fish for parasites to nip it in the bud before they start pooping worms, too.
I assume this is a new fish? Next time quarantine the new one and observe for a week or so in a small aquarium before adding it to the tank. Fish bought from stores are prone to having diseases, parasites, and fungus. along with being stressed from shipping and handling. This is why so many die.
Bettas are one of the few fish that are exceptions because they have to be kept isolated because of their aggression. Too bad they don't raise all fish that way, but the store employees who had to feed them all would hate it.
Try adding a small amount of salt to your water, about a teaspoon per gallon. You didn't mention what other kind of fish you have, but chances are they can handle a touch of brine in their environment.

Nope, there are fish that devour leftover fish and devour some alage, yet all they do is convert that too more desirable fish poop, and all of them get to particular for a 10gal. I advise you get an Apple snail to help administration the algae, and a gravel vac to help administration the fish (and snail) poop. Ian

no big deal, don't panic, most fish that have been raised outdoors
(like breeding farms in florida) have parasites, no need to quarantine this one fish as it has already been in the aquarium with the others, just go get parasite medicine and dose them
there are many on the market but the best is CLOUT

I would go to your local pet or fush store...sounds like your goldfish has worms...it could kill and destroy your 55gal fish tank if you not careful. I would resolve this issue ASAP.
