It's completely degrading and totally annoying that now, suddenly, there are certain books that are considered "girl's books" and are defined as chick literature. Examples of such books would be the Gossip Girl book(s), TTYL and so on. I'm a girl, but I hate those books, because not only are they annoying, they are also badly written.

RJ: Comparing Jane Austen (spelled with an E, btw) to modern-day Chick Lit writers? Wow. You are out of it!

I'm with you here.
The genre is purely a response to a marketing niche that some brilliant businessman imagined. The material that I have read in this genre is absolute rubbish. It is disgraceful. I guess you and me just aren't 'chicks'; presumably if we were, we would like chick lit.

Not at all. It's in the same context as "Chick Flick" - the genre that a movie is branded as it will appeal to an audience predominantly female.
The same genre has been applied to "Chick Lit" - it isn't supposed to be an offensive term meant to "dumb down" the female of the species. It merely means it has a target audience. Publishing houses always look to the market they are going to target before they take on a new manuscript.
This is all just about advertising and post modernism - no need to get annoyed.
As for me, I don't fall into the target audience of "Chick Lit" or "Chick Flicks", I prefer a totally different stylre and genre. But annoyed? Nope

I understand how you feel, but I don't feel the same way. If people think that girls will relate to those books better then guys, then they might as well call those books chick-lit. A lot of adults like children's books, but you wouldn't have them be called adult's books when they are aimed for children. Chick-lit is aimed at girls, that's all.

"Why can no longer we in basic terms be expert and make contact with it healthcare reform?" via fact asserting this suggests that law is extremely "reforming" some thing..........it isnt'. And at the same time as i in my opinion do locate the term Obamacare particularly annoying, i do no longer locate it practically as despicable via fact the federal govt. forcing all and sundry to purchase medical coverage from a for earnings business enterprise or be fined. EDIT: @Eliot ok.........."the Obama plan has many classes that human beings help." do no longer underestimate the actuality human beings are stupid. some human beings love the pre-present situation section, yet oppose the mandate (no longer understanding one is mandatory for the different). I for one do no longer think of a few reward are nicely worth giving the government the skill to mandate what you may purchase. EDIT: Why no longer in basic terms call it "well being care law"?

This is really new to me...I am from the generation where a chick-lit is a piece of gum. It is sad that there is a market developing that assumes girls are superficial and that writers do not have to challenge or truly entertain. I respect you for wanting to stimulate your mind and seek genuine works of literature.

Well, really, just because "chick lit" novels are supposedly only written for girls, doesn't necessarily mean that males cannot read them. They are still free to choose what they want to read. The only problem is, many of them feel that for the sake of their pride and reputation, they should read more books that are supposedly only for males, or do not have a specific "gender" according to our sexist society.

I am annoyed with the term chick-lit...isn't that a type of gum? It usually just means to me that the story is written appealing to the fantasy life that girls want to believe in, real life is so much more facinating?

Just a more recent manifestation of the current trend in feminism. I'm severely annoyed by all of it, I'm afraid. Women don't need men to exploit us anymore, we degrade ourselves, when we subscribe to such nonsense. But, the term "chick lit" is apt; you don't see men buying the stuff.

Annoyed by the term? Nah.
Annoyed by Chick Lit? Yeah, taking up too much shelf space from better quality lit, IMO...

totally agree.
whatever happened to literature that was about a protagonist dealing with more than her failing love life and her "fight" to find a man before she must die alone.
I need a book about something substantial that actually has meaning.
