alligators live in freshwater only. crocodiles live in salt water and freshwater, there is different types. to tell a crocodile apart, look at their snouts. an alligators snout is much wider, and there eyes are kind of on the top of his head. crocodiles snouts are thiner, and there eyes are on the sides of there head. i know you didnt ask that but i felt like telling you.

They live in fresh water but can wander to brackish which leads to salt water. It is very rare to find one in salt water here in Florida but occasionally they go astray. You don't have to worry about them at the beach however, if one ever showed up there the alligator trappers would get them immediately

alligators can and will live in fresh and brackish waters, they will go into salt water, but for only couple of days after awhile it starts to dehydrate them and you can't drink salt water, they use the salt water and marshes mainly to move from area to area, and they will feed in salt water areas.I am a liscened trapper in S.C. bordered to Ga. and have trapped them for over 20 years.

Fresh, though they can enter salt for short periods of time. Crocs are the ones that can handle either for extended periods as they have a salt gland.
