I live in an upstairs apartment and it gets VERY hot. (I live in Texas) and my apartment manager won't let us put aluminum foil over our windows to reflect the heat. What else can I do? Like are there any special types of curtains I can maybe use? The sun is heating up my apartment and running my electric bills sky high.

Try Roman shades made from shade cloth (Home Depot). They will block a large percentage of the heat coming in from the sun and allow for a minimally obstructed view.

Thermal drapes are about the most effective in blocking entry/exit of heat. These are readily available.

try drapes instead of curtains they have a thicker lining so they help keep the heat out or you may want to try mini blinds and keep them closed until the sun goes down good luck

insulated curtains are great. they have a thick backing on the fabric that blocks out light and heat/cold. here's a link to the amazon.com page where you can see lots of different styles and colors:

there are curtains that have something like a rubber backing. They cost big$$$. But they do the job.
