OMG! My mom was a city girl and married a farmer. We had these little black berries growing in the grove. We didn't know what they were so we didn't eat them. In searching for the elderberry bush not in blossom, I discovered those little black berries were elderberries. Thank You for your question!

Here is a site. The first few pictures are drawings, but scroll down more and you will find photos of it in blossom, in full leaf and berry laden. You can compare the leaves, or make a print out of the picture and go a hunting for the bushes. Here is the site: http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com/Plants.Folder/Elderberry.html

Here is a site that has a good picture, just click on it to enlarge the photo: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gl_plants_fruits/article/0,1785,HGTV_3606_2236263,00.html

I know this is really out in left field, but contact the Maine Federal Highway Administration. They can tell you the vegetation planted along Maine's highways. Here is their site: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/rdsduse/me.htm

Good Luck, hope this helps.

I dont know of any in Maine, but are you refering to American elderberry, Sambucus canadensis? If so you can locate them by there leaves which are opposite on the bush, or by the fruit which are a dark colored berry in large heads at the ends of the branches. I know you could purchase some from different forest service sites such as the one I work for for $15 for 10 plus $6 for UPS shipping. I work for the North Carolina Forest Service
